50 Years of Growing Vegetables!

The society was founded in 1960 and will be celebrating 50 years and still growing strong in 2010. Our strength is in the membership and members belong to regional branches. There are five of these regional branches and associated to these are the District Associations which serve local areas.

Usually the District Associations (we call them DAs for short!) meet regularly and arrange talks, trips etc for the members For details of local DA's and branches go to About the NVS

Growing & Showing Vegetables

There's a wealth of knowledge in the society and our members have written many articles on vegetable growing which are published in the quarterly magazine that is sent out to members. We've got many of these articles of interest to gardeners and not just vegetable growers although we do concentrate on growing superb vegetables, on the site here: Vegetable Growing Articles

As well as the advice and help the society offers to novice vegetable growers, we also train and examine horticultural judges for shows and maintain a list of horticultural lecturers.

We also have a list of horticultural shows you can visit (or exhibit in!) listed here: Horticultural Shows.

National Championships & Shows

Each year the society holds championships where the best vegetable growers in the land compete for the coveted red winner's card and prizes. This competition is hosted by a different banch each year.

For 2010, our 50th anniversary year, they will be hosted by the Scottish Branch in Dundee.

The 2009 NVS championships were held at Dorchester in the Dorset County show in 2009. Dorset County Show is one of the premier agricultural and horticultural events in the region. There's a full report in the news section here: NVS Vegetable Show 2009

The 2008 competition was held at Harrogate: NVS National Championships 2008

The results from 2007 National Championship at Malvern are also available on the site.
