The National Vegetable Society
Society for enthusiasts who want to advance, gain, give advice and enjoy growing and/or exhibiting vegetables
A Word From the Lady Chair
Welcome to the National Vegetable Society and I hope you enjoy browsing our website.
The Society, formed in 1961, is now a registered charity with the principal aim of promoting and encouraging the growing of vegetables by providing expert help and advice.
Our membership spans from the novice to the seasoned growers anxious to share their knowledge and experience.
Now you have visited our site I sincerely hope you will join us and become part of a growing, friendly and regionally based organisation. As part of membership you will have access to our ‘members only’ area, and to a members forum where you can have your specific questions answered and amongst other benefits receive our highly recommended Simply Vegetables magazine and much more.
A bit about me:
I am a dairy farmer’s daughter from a little village in Herefordshire, where the ‘Village Hall’ was very much the heart of the community with always something going on and everybody involved.
When I was a teenager I found a love for sport, main one being swimming, taking it on competitively at local, County and even trying out at Country level. It was an experience for sure! Then hockey of which I made the Shropshire County team
I left school and went into ‘Catering & Hospitality’ working in hotels, bars and restaurants.
I am still in the industry today 40 years on, working in the Catering department at Harper-Adams University (Agriculture, Veterinary, land and rural affairs based studies) working on a field to fork ethos watching the food miles/carbon footprint and promoting fresh produce and knowing where it’s come from.
I am married to Mark, with three children and three grandchildren, we live in an old black & white cottage with about an acre of land, mainly field and only a small garden. About twelve months ago we acquired a commercial polytunnel and put in the corner of the field where I have now started to grow fruit and vegetables for me and the table not the show bench.
I have been a member of the NVS since the early 80’s but only becoming more involved in the early 90’s when the children were older, joining the Midlands Branch committee. I was assistant secretary for many years before becoming general secretary in 2004, then to Lady Chair in 2013. Position in which I still hold today, but am relinquishing at the next AGM.
I was awarded my Fellowship in 2002 silver medal in 2009 and gold medal in 2017.
With my knowledge and experience gained from within the Society and my career in the Food industry I feel I have a lot to offer the Society, which will ultimately benefit us all.
