Scottish Branch - Annual Garden Visit
This year, we have planned a lovely day out in South Lanarkshire.
Firstly we will be meeting at 10.00am at New Lanark Heritage Centre, ML11 9DB.
New Lanark is a former 18th century cotton spinning mill village located on the banks of the Falls of Clyde just under 1 hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh. It is recognised as one of Scotland’s 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites of ‘outstanding universal value’ . New Lanark has a resident village community of 65 households, set within a National Nature Reserve with outstanding designed landscapes and woodlands. In the village there is an award-winning Visitor Centre offering a range of visitor attractions including;
Annie McLeod (mill girl) Experience Ride
People, Cotton & Working Machinery
Roof Garden
Robert Owen's School for Children
Tenement Through Time
Millworker's House
Robert Owen's House
The village was created by John Dale to provide accommodation for his workforce, the business was later bought over by Robert Owen who greatly improved the conditions for the workers, developed the village using the profits from the mill and implemented business efficiency’s. He provided decent homes, fair wages, free health care, a new education system for villagers and the first workplace nursery school in the world!
Note 1 Visitors are required to park in the main visitor car park located at the top of the hill. The parking charge is £3 per day and it’s suggested you bring cash for this. There is disabled parking at the visitor centre with a shuttle bus running from the car park to the Visitor Centre on a regular basis.
Note 2 Using sat nav , use post code ML11 9BY. Please note, some sat navs try to take you via The Beeches. However, this country track is NOT recommended for vehicles. Please follow the brown road signs which will direct you to New Lanark via Hyndford Road.
After meeting at 10.00am, our members will be free to wander around the various attraction areas then gather for lunch.
Lunch will be reserved for us at the Mill Café with a fee of £14 / head for Soup of the day, a selection of sandwiches and Tea & Coffee. ( fee payable on the day)
After lunch we plan to visit two of our Scottish growers Gardens; namely Allan Laird and Cairns Galbraith.
Allan has been on the growing and showing scene for some years and is a regular exhibitor at the Scottish Branch Championships including the big collection. This will give us a chance to see all the veg that Allan grows and his various set ups including his Pot leeks.
Cairns recently burst onto the show scene with great enthusiasm and as such, his first ever Veg show entry was at the National Championship in Ayr last year, where he got a ticket for his large Exhibition onions. Such is the benefit of being an NVS member and reaching out to other growers to glean hints tips, help and ideas. Cairns is excited to share what he has been developing in his garden area.
Visit to both gardens will provide a range of interesting growing methods to see and I’m quite sure, as is usual in our garden visits, we will pick up plenty of hints tips and ideas, whilst sharing information, stories and a few laughs throughout the day.
If you wish to go on this visit, we do need to know specific numbers of people for booking purposes. We have set up a booking system. You can book your place on-line ( just like you would book a zoom talk). If you need help or don’t use the internet, please contact Fiona Shenfield for details on email [email protected] or Tel 07740 137 204. Meanwhile, this is the New Lanark website should you wish to find out more www.newlanark.org
